The Old Black Lion

Surrounded by beautiful scenery but just a few minutes' walk from Hay-On-Wye's centre, this charming inn has a traditional wooden-beamed bar. Dating back hundreds of years, Oliver Cromwell is rumoured to have stayed in the 17th century. The Old Black Lion was voted 'The Best Pub in Powys' and was in the Top 8 for Wales with the 'National Pub & Bar Awards' in 2023. Our award winning 2 AA Rosette restaurant also won the prestigious Good Food Award Gold Seal for 2024. We recommend booking a meal with us via the messaging service so you can enjoy our great food and service before retiring to your room. There is also an option to order a delicious, freshly cooked breakfast using locally sourced produce on arrival or via a message beforehand for just £10pp. Each room is traditional in style, with a carpeted floor and en suite bathroom. Each also has a flat-screen TV for guests to use, and facilities for making tea and coffee.

Hay days...

Pros: The Old Black Lion is extremely well placed to explore Hay. The staff were very friendly and accomodating, expecially with my various eating disorders. I was there for 2 nights and both of my evening meals were excellent. I only had very small, ( non-cooked) breakfasts so can't really comment on them. My room was comfortable. I would stay again....indeed l plan to next year.

Cons: Only a little thing, which didn't impact on my enjoyment of my stay..... l'd have liked my shower water to have been hotter. Everything else was fine and dandy...

Great hospitality, good food, comfy surroundings - what' not to like?

Pros: The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and we were made to feel at home. We very much enjoyed being able to join in with the pub quiz night! Many thanks for a lovely stay.

Cons: It's a very old property with inevitable drawbacks, but that was part of the charm - so not really a disadvantage.

Pros: Wonderfully historic building (I love wonky walls and floors) in a superb location. Staff were all lovely and friendly and the restaurant food and service was first class. Bedroom and bathroom was spacious, warm and well appointed. Very comfy bed too.

Cons: The room was clean and comfy but a couple of tiny details prevented me from giving top stars across the board: the TV remote batteries were flat (we weren't bothered about watching it as we prefer to read but just wanted to see the news), there was a stray dirty sock (presumably from a previous occupant) in the wardrobe, and there was a piece of dried pasta on the carpet just under the bed. These are insignificant things really and didn't affect our enjoyment of our stay. We'd happily return.

Lovely room in the coach house which is literally a couple of steps away from the main building.

Pros: Liked everything. Lovely pleasant staff with a good welcome. Quick check in and shown to our room which was lovely and warm which was a BIG plus as it had recently been snowing and was -1 🥶 had a really good meal in the evening and would definitely recommend 👍🏻

Cons: Nothing everything was great.

Pros: Great quirky room apparently with a friendly ghost, which we had no experience with, thank goodness. Staff and food excellent.

Cons: Water pressure and temperature in the shower was a bit unpredictable.

Pleasant stay in a pretty village location.

Pros: Stayed for one night, visited the Christmas Fayre and book shops. The staff were friendly, the room was a good size and comfortable. The menu for dinner didn't have many options but we both found something we liked and thoroughly enjoyed. The breakfast was good although they were out of kippers but the chef offered smoked haddock instead. The property is set in a pretty village location, would stay again.

The staff went the extra mile by kindly posting some left items back to me. Highly recommended.

Pros: A real gem of a place, with amazing staff. We couldn't have been made more welcome - delicious breakfast and dinner. Log fire in the bar was perfect after a cold bike ride
